Thunderbird Creek’s spectacular natural setting is one of its biggest assets. For this reason among others, we feel it’s our responsibility as developers to do everything we can to protect the local ecosystem. In addition to the many earth friendly features we’ve incorporated in the homes at Thunderbird Creek, the manner in which we’ve designed and built the community as a whole further reflects our commitment to preserving the health and beauty of the surrounding environment, both now and in the future. Examples of some of Thunderbird Creek’s many sustainable initiatives include:

Did you know that the roads of Thunderbird Creek are sloped? A slight 2 percent grade directs rainwater to roadside rain gardens where it’s bio-filtered and dispersed back into the ground. The road is also slightly narrower than most and follows the natural contour of the land. Designed to preserve the natural drainage patterns and water quality of nearby Thunderbird and Meighan Creeks, these features are part of a comprehensive stormwater management system aimed at safeguarding local fish and wildlife habitats.

The gardens at Thunderbird Creek are not your garden-variety gardens. Part of a comprehensive stormwater management system, the rain gardens spread throughout the community, play a critical role in preserving the water quality and natural drainage patterns of nearby Thunderbird and Meighan Creeks. By collecting run-off water from roads and driveways, bio-filtering it and dispersing it back into the ground, this rain garden helps safeguard local fish and wildlife habitats.

Light pollution not only makes it hard to find your favourite constellation, it also has a detrimental effect on nocturnal species, as well as plants, shrubs and trees that need darkness to regenerate certain compounds at night. To minimize artificial glow, Thunderbird Creek utilizes specially designed streetlights that focus light only where it’s needed, virtually eliminating spill over into the nighttime sky and windows of nearby homes.

To minimize the community’s environmental footprint and reduce landfill dependence, we’ve developed an award-winning, smoke-free burn pit that incinerates wood waste without compromising local air quality. The first of its kind in the Lower Mainland, this on-site 20 by 40-foot pit is lined with steel from reclaimed railcars and topped with concrete blocks. An air-burning machine directs a continuous stream of high-velocity air into the pit to keep temperatures high for a cleaner, more complete burn with little ash and no smoke.

Thunderbird Creek’s spectacular natural setting is one of its biggest assets, and we’re doing everything we can to preserve its health and beauty for generations to come. Upon completion, over 20 percent of the community will be dedicated to protected green space with a vast network of biking and hiking trails that will enable local residents to reduce their car dependence and enjoy their journeys as much as their destinations.

Through these and other green initiatives we hope to minimize the community’s ecological footprint while preserving it’s exceptional beauty for future generations of homeowners.
